Lalah Hathaway

Lalah Hathaway is a five-time Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and producer recognized for her distinctive voice in contemporary R&B, jazz, and pop music. Known as the First Daughter of Soul, Hathaway is the first-born daughter of musician Donny Hathaway. She is noted for her rich contralto and mastery of multiphonic overtone singing, which allows her to sing multiple notes simultaneously, a technique that has drawn attention from both audiences and fellow musicians.

Hathaway attended Berklee College of Music and released her debut single, "Inside the Beat," before her self-titled album on Virgin Records. Her debut's lead single, "Heaven Knows," reached the top five on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. She continued to expand her artistry with albums such as "A Moment," the jazz collaboration with Joe Sample, "The Song Lives On," and "Outrun the Sky," which featured the chart-topping single "Forever, for Always, for Love." Her Stax debut, "Self Portrait," is regarded as a personal milestone in her discography.

Hathaway earned multiple Grammy Awards, including Best R&B Performance for "Something" with Snarky Puppy and three consecutive Best Traditional R&B Performance Awards for "Jesus Children," "Little Ghetto Boy," and "Angel." Her live album, "Lalah Hathaway Live," recorded at the Troubadour in Los Angeles, won Best R&B Album. Hathaway shares the record with Beyoncé for the most Best Traditional R&B Performance Grammy Awards.

With a career spanning more than three decades, Hathaway's music bridges genres from R&B ballads to jazz and pop standards. She has collaborated with artists such as Pharrell Williams, Kendrick Lamar, Dr. Dre, Anderson .Paak, and Snoop Dogg, and has performed alongside Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Anita Baker. Her film and television appearances include "Girls Trip," BET's "Being Mary Jane," and Netflix's "Family Reunion." She headlined Lincoln Center's Out of Doors concert series with the show "Legacy: Lalah Hathaway Sings Donny Hathaway."

Hathaway continues to release music through her independent label Hathaway Entertainment, including albums "Honestly" and "Vantablack." An alumna of Berklee College of Music, she received an honorary doctorate from the institution. Hathaway has served as a national ambassador for Susan G. Komen's Circle of Promise, supporting breast cancer awareness and education in the African-American community. Her enduring career highlights her versatility and influence in the music industry, particularly in R&B, soul, and jazz.
