Kymberlee O'Brien, MEd, PhD

Dr. Kymberlee O'Brien, M.Ed., Ph.D., is a psychophysiologist and neuroscience researcher who studies the biology of stress reactivity under pressure, and who has lived it. For nearly 18 years, Dr. O'Brien has directed her own research labs studying the body's physiological response to acute competitive and social stress, including more than 300 clinical-grade hair cortisol preparations and extensive heart rate variability, HRV, and neuroendocrine work on how stress hormones shape performance under pressure. Her research reframes impostor syndrome not as a mindset problem but as a physiological one, an adaptive response rooted in the body's ancient stress-detection systems, offering audiences a fundamentally different, evidence-based way to understand self-doubt, confidence, and performance under evaluation. She brings live biometric demonstrations to the stage, including EEG and HRV, to make the science tangible for audiences.

Dr. O'Brien is also a working performer, a jazz vocalist who has stood on stage under exactly the kind of acute, high-stakes physiological load she studies in the lab, which gives her science a rare, lived credibility with audiences. She is a faculty member at a New England college where she teaches Neuroscience of Leadership, and she founded NeuraLight Consulting to bring this research to organizations navigating real-time pressure. She has delivered Grand Rounds to several notable medical facilities on the neuroscience of impostor syndrome.
