Kevin Sumlin

Kevin Sumlin is a veteran football coach whose career spans more than three decades, impacting college football at multiple levels. Following his prep career, Sumlin attended Purdue University, where he was a starting linebacker throughout his college career, finishing in the top 10 in total tackles with 375 and earning a trip to the Peach Bowl. He was named to Sports Illustrated's All-America walk-on list as a freshman after leading Purdue with 91 tackles and earned honorable mention All-Big Ten honors as a senior while ranking fifth in the league with 114 tackles. After graduating, Sumlin transitioned into coaching, beginning his ascent through the ranks of college football.

Sumlin served as an assistant at several programs, including Washington State, Wyoming, Minnesota, and Purdue, gaining experience and working with respected coaches such as Bob Stoops at Oklahoma. At Purdue, he helped implement the spread offense, contributing to the Boilermakers' record-breaking passing attack with Drew Brees at quarterback and a Rose Bowl appearance. At Oklahoma, as co-offensive coordinator, Sumlin helped lead the Sooners to the Sugar Bowl and the Orange Bowl national title game.

Sumlin earned his first head coaching opportunity at the University of Houston, where his tenure included a 12-0 season start. At Houston, he led the Cougars to two Conference USA West Division titles and was named Conference USA Coach of the Year twice. His success in Houston led to his appointment as head coach at Texas A&M, where he guided the Aggies to an 11-2 record in their SEC debut, including a win over Alabama and a Cotton Bowl victory. Quarterback Johnny Manziel won the Heisman Trophy under Sumlin's leadership. His head coaching career has been defined by an up-tempo spread offense that propelled quarterbacks like Case Keenum at Houston and Johnny Manziel at Texas A&M, earning Sumlin national Coach of the Year honors from the American Football Coaches Association and the Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year Award. Over six seasons at Texas A&M, Sumlin posted six consecutive winning seasons and earned three bowl victories.

Sumlin was one of the few African American head coaches in Division I football during his tenure at Houston, contributing to increased diversity in the sport. He has coached in 16 bowl games, including all four traditional New Year's Day games. As a former linebacker for the Purdue Boilermakers, Sumlin has compiled an overall head coaching record of 98-70, demonstrating his ability to build and lead successful programs across various conferences.

The United Football League named Sumlin head coach of the Houston Gamblers, marking a return to the city where he first established his reputation as a head coach. With nearly 100 career wins, Sumlin brings deep ties to Houston and a track record of offensive innovation and player development to the Gamblers. His coaching philosophy emphasizes offensive strategy, player growth, and resilience, providing the Gamblers with experienced leadership on the spring football stage.
