Kevin Richardson Biography
Kevin D. Richardson is an advocate for criminal justice reform whose personal experience with wrongful conviction has shaped his work and public voice. At age 14, Richardson was arrested and falsely convicted in the 1989 Central Park jogger case, spending five-and-a-half years in prison before his release on probation. Decades later, the conviction was vacated, and in 2014, a lawsuit he joined with the other wrongfully convicted men was settled for $41 million.
Richardson has since dedicated himself to promoting fairness and accountability in the justice system. He has partnered with the Innocence Project, a nonprofit organization committed to exonerating wrongfully convicted individuals through DNA testing, and frequently speaks about the dangers of coerced confessions and systemic inequities. His story was portrayed in the 2019 Netflix miniseries "When They See Us," which brought renewed attention to the injustices faced by Richardson and the other members of the Central Park Five. In 2020, he received an honorary Bachelor of Fine Arts in music from Syracuse University.
