Kevin Pearce

Kevin Pearce is an American former professional snowboarder, motivational speaker, mentor, and health coach known for his achievements in competitive snowboarding and his advocacy for brain injury awareness. Pearce entered the professional snowboarding scene at age 18, quickly establishing himself as a leading athlete in the sport. During his career, he secured victories at events such as the Oakley Arctic Challenge, the Air & Style contest, and the Burton European Open, where he defeated Shaun White. Pearce was named World Snowboard Tour champion and earned a silver medal in the superpipe at the Winter X Games, positioning him as a top contender for the Vancouver Winter Olympics. He also won three medals at the Winter X Games XII in Aspen, Colorado, becoming the first athlete in X Games history to compete in three medal events in a single day.

Pearce was recognized as a significant competitor to Shaun White, having bested him at several international events and being referred to as White's only real rival. However, his trajectory changed dramatically following a training accident in Park City, Utah, where he suffered a traumatic brain injury while practicing a double cork maneuver. The injury left him unconscious and in critical condition, requiring extensive medical intervention and resulting in ongoing neurological challenges. Pearce spent five months in the hospital recovering, a journey documented in the film "The Crash Reel."

The injury resulted in persistent double vision, memory loss, seizures, and other physical and psychological impairments. Pearce's recovery involved relearning basic skills and adopting yoga and meditation as daily practices to manage symptoms and support mental health. Although he returned to snowboarding recreationally, he ultimately stepped away from elite competition, sharing his experiences publicly to raise awareness about traumatic brain injuries.

Pearce's story is chronicled in the HBO documentary "The Crash Reel," directed by Lucy Walker. The film is widely used in both the snowboarding community and in educational settings for medical professionals. Pearce was selected to carry the torch during the Winter Olympics Opening Ceremonies and received the Victory Award from the National Rehabilitation Hospital for his advocacy work. He has also provided commentary for the X Games with ESPN, maintaining his influence in the snowboarding industry.

Together with his brother Adam, Pearce co-founded the LoveYourBrain Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has served thousands of people in multiple countries through retreats, hospital partnerships, and meditation resources for traumatic brain injury patients. The foundation promotes brain health through yoga, meditation, and mindfulness programs. Pearce also serves as a Sports Ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society, inspired by his older brother David. As a keynote speaker, Pearce shares insights on resilience, recovery, and community, drawing from his experiences in professional sports and brain injury advocacy.
