Keith Humphreys

Keith Humphreys is the Esther Ting Memorial Professor at Stanford University and a Senior Research Career Scientist in the Veterans Health Administration. He also holds the title of Honorary Professor at the Institute of Psychiatry, King's College, London. Humphreys has gained international recognition for his expertise in addiction policy, advising multiple administrations around the globe. In addition to his academic roles, Humphreys is the Deputy Editor in Chief for the journal "Addiction" and the author of "Circles of Recovery," a book that analyzes the positive effects of mutual help groups on substance use disorders. His research contributions include the 2020 Cochrane Systematic Review of Alcoholics Anonymous Research, which offered substantial evidence supporting the benefits of Alcoholics Anonymous participation.

During his career, Humphreys served under President George W. Bush as a Member of the White House Commission on Drug-Free Communities and was a Senior Policy Advisor at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy during the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He has also been actively involved in shaping federal policy, serving as a senior editor of U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy’s report "Facing Addiction in America". Further demonstrating his policy expertise, Humphreys has testified before numerous U.S. congressional committees and subcommittees on subjects revolving around drug policy and addiction.

Humphreys' influence extends beyond the United States. He contributed to the Blue Ribbon Commission on Marijuana Law and Policy in association with California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom and advised the State of Washington on effective marijuana industry regulation post-legalization. In recognition of his work in Britain, including advising the London Greater Authority and participating in independent reviews and commissions on drug and alcohol harm, Queen Elizabeth II honored Humphreys in 2022 as an Honorary Officer of the British Empire. His prolific writing career includes contributions to the Washington Post and publications in The New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, and The Guardian. His influential articles have also appeared in eminent journals such as the American Journal of Public Health, Foreign Affairs, and the New England Journal of Medicine.
