Keith Jones is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player, broadcaster, and executive known for his contributions to Philadelphia sports. Jones was drafted by Washington in the seventh round of the NHL Draft following a four-year career at Western Michigan University, where he recorded 163 points in 153 games. He was named the team's Rookie of the Year and MVP, and earned First Team All-CCHA honors. He was later inducted into the Western Michigan University Athletics Hall of Fame. Jones is among the few players to reach the NHL after playing Junior C-level hockey at age 18.
Jones played nine years in the NHL, registering 258 points and 765 penalty minutes in 491 regular-season games with Washington, Colorado, and Philadelphia. He began his career in Philadelphia when he was acquired by the Flyers from the Avalanche, going on to record 74 points and 164 penalty minutes in 131 games as a Flyer. He collected 24 points and 120 penalty minutes in 63 career Stanley Cup Playoff contests across eight consecutive postseasons. Jones retired due to a knee injury.
After his playing career, Jones transitioned into sports broadcasting. He began as co-host of 94.1 WIP's morning show with Angelo Cataldi, a role he held for more than two decades, before moving into television as an in-studio analyst for "The NHL on NBC" and as a color commentator for NBC Sports Philadelphia. Jones spent 23 years as an analyst for Flyers telecasts, covering events such as the NHL Winter Classic and the Stanley Cup Final. He co-authored the autobiography "Jonesy: Put Your Head Down and Skate" with ESPN's John Buccigross, with proceeds benefiting Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation for childhood cancer.
Jones was named president of hockey operations for the Philadelphia Flyers, responsible for leading the strategic direction of the hockey operations department and collaborating on business goals. His appointment marked his first role in an NHL front office. Jones brought with him a network built over decades in the game, including relationships with Colorado president of hockey operations Joe Sakic, Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald, and Rangers general manager Chris Drury. He played a key role in a complex trade involving defenseman Ivan Provorov, leveraging his relationship with L.A. Kings general manager Rob Blake to facilitate the deal.
Jones's career path—from Junior C player to NHL enforcer, broadcaster, and front-office executive—demonstrates adaptability and a deep commitment to hockey. His experience in professional hockey, sports media, and team management continues to shape his influence within the NHL and the broader sports industry.
