Karen Lloyd Biography
Karen G. Lloyd is the Wrigley Professor of Earth Sciences, and Marine and Environmental Biology at the University of Southern California. She is on the frontlines of the discovery of strange new types of microbial life inside Earth's crust. Her work takes her on adventures to the deep-sea, mud volcanoes, subseafloor sediments, methane seeps, terrestrial volcanoes, hot springs, serpentinizing springs, Arctic fjords, deep gold mines, and ancient permafrost across the globe.
She has over a hundred scientific publications, including in Nature and Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, two TED talks which have collectively been viewed ~5 million times, is a Sloan Research Fellow, NASA Early Career Fellow, Simons Early Career Fellow, and National Academy of Sciences Kavli Fellow. Her work has been covered by the New York Times, NBC, Newsweek, and others. She is the author of “Intraterrestrials: Discovering the Strangest Life on Earth,” Princeton University Press, which was recently long-listed for the PEN EO Wilson Literary Award.
