Kai Bird

Kai Bird is an American historian, journalist, and biographer recognized for his extensive work on 20th-century history, nuclear policy, and United States-Middle East relations. Bird has authored several biographies and historical works that examine influential political figures and pivotal events, particularly focusing on the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and U.S. foreign policy.

Bird is a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship, Alicia Patterson Journalism Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, and the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Grant for Research and Writing. He is an elected member of the Society of American Historians.

Bird co-authored "American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer" with Martin J. Sherwin, a biography of theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, leader of the Manhattan Project. The book explores Oppenheimer's scientific achievements and his subsequent security hearing during the McCarthy era. "American Prometheus" received the National Book Critics Circle Award, the Pulitzer Prize for Biography or Autobiography, and the Duff Cooper Prize. The biography served as the basis for a major film adaptation by Christopher Nolan.

Bird's other works include "The Color of Truth: McGeorge Bundy and William Bundy, Brothers in Arms" and "The Chairman: John J. McCloy and the Making of the American Establishment," both of which analyze American power and diplomacy. "The Good Spy: The Life and Death of Robert Ames" examines the career of CIA officer Robert Ames and his involvement in Middle East peace efforts. "The Good Spy" appeared on the New York Times bestseller list. Bird also authored "The Outlier: The Unfinished Presidency of Jimmy Carter" and the memoir "Crossing Mandelbaum Gate: Coming of Age Between the Arabs and Israelis," which was a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award and the Dayton Literary Peace Prize.

Bird has contributed to the field of biography as executive director of the Leon Levy Center for Biography at the CUNY Graduate Center in New York. He has been recognized with the BIO Award from the Biographers International Organization for his contributions to the craft of biography. Bird has stated that biography offers a unique perspective on history, providing insight into broader historical contexts through the lens of individual lives.
