Julia Sweig Biography
Julia E. Sweig is an American scholar, author, and expert on U.S.–Latin American relations, especially Cuba and foreign policy. She is author of "Friendly Fire: Losing Friends and Making Enemies in the Anti-American Century" (PublicAffairs, 2006) and "Inside the Cuban Revolution: Fidel Castro and the Urban Underground," which received the American Historical Association’s Herbert Feis Award. She also wrote "Cuba: What Everyone Needs to Know" and more recently "Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight," a New York Times bestseller exploring the first lady’s political influence.
Sweig previously served as Nelson and David Rockefeller Senior Fellow for Latin America Studies and Director for Latin America Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations and has directed CFR reports on Cuba and the Andean region. She is currently a non-resident senior research fellow at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas-Austin and continues to publish and comment on U.S. foreign policy.
She appears frequently in major media in English and Spanish and has written numerous opinion pieces, scholarly articles, and congressional testimonies on Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, and broader American foreign policy.
