Judy Collins

Judy Collins is a prominent figure in music, recognized for her soprano voice, diverse repertoire, and commitment to political activism. Collins emerged as a key participant in the folk song revival, beginning her vocal career with traditional Anglo-American ballads before transitioning to urban protest songs that reflected the era's social movements. She started her music career at age 13 as a piano prodigy, performing Mozart's "Concerto for Two Pianos" before embracing the folk tradition. Her performances on the national coffeehouse circuit led to a recording contract with Elektra Records, initiating a career spanning more than six decades.

Collins' voice has adapted to a range of genres, including Appalachian folk, folk-rock, show tunes, a cappella, and the works of contemporary songwriters such as Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan, and Jacques Brel. Her rendition of Joni Mitchell's "Both Sides Now" from the album "Wildflowers" is included in the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her interpretation of "Send in the Clowns," written by Stephen Sondheim for the Broadway musical "A Little Night Music," earned "Song of the Year" at the Grammy Awards. Collins has played a significant role in introducing singer-songwriters such as Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Randy Newman to broader audiences. She has achieved several top-ten hits and gold- and platinum-selling albums. Artists including Rufus Wainwright, Shawn Colvin, Dolly Parton, Joan Baez, and Leonard Cohen honored her with the album "Born to the Breed: A Tribute to Judy Collins."

Throughout her career, Collins has received multiple honors, including the Spirit of Americana/Free Speech Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association, the Lifetime Achievement Award at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, and the International Lifetime Achievement Award at the UK Americana Awards. Her album "Spellbound," featuring all self-penned songs, was nominated for Best Folk Album at the Grammy Awards. Collins has also published the poetry collection "Sometimes It's Heaven: Poems of Love, Loss and Redemption."

In addition to her music career, Collins is an author, filmmaker, and activist. She co-directed the Academy Award-nominated film "Portrait of a Woman" about Antonia Brico, the first woman to conduct major symphonies worldwide. Collins is a frequent keynote speaker on mental health and suicide prevention and has written books including "Sanity & Grace," "Sweet Judy Blue Eyes: My Life in Music," "Cravings," and "Singing Lessons." She has addressed her experiences with addiction and mental illness through her lyrics and autobiographical works, contributing to ongoing conversations about mental health. Collins also serves as a social activist, representing UNICEF and other causes, and continues to be recognized for her influence in music, literature, and humanitarian efforts.
