Judith Herman

Judith Herman, a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, carries a prominent role at the forefront of mental health research and practice. She serves as the Director of Training at the Victims of Violence Program at the Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is a founding member of the Women's Mental Health Collective. Her impactful work earned her the 1996 Lifetime Achievement Award from the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies and the Woman in Science Award by the American Medical Women's Association in 2000.

Aside from her research, Herman is a published author, with books such as "Trauma and Recovery: The Aftermath of Violence - from Domestic Abuse to Political Terror", "Father-daughter Incest", and "Truth and Repair: How Trauma Survivors Envision Justice" to her credit. These works delve into her research focus on the effects of the justice system on victims of sexual violence. In 2003, Herman's significant contributions to her field were acknowledged when she was named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.

As an active educator, Herman also contributes to the academic community by sharing her insights through lectures and interviews. One of her notable lectures was "Justice from the Victim's Perspective", delivered at Wesleyan University in 2010. That same year, she participated in an interview titled "Conversations with History: The Case of Trauma and Recovery Psychological Insight and Political Understanding with Judith Herman" with Harry Kreisler, further showcasing her expertise on trauma and justice.

She attended Radcliffe College as an undergraduate, and she received her MD from Harvard University in 1968. She completed her residency in psychiatry at the Boston University Medical Center. She has been a professor of psychiatry at Harvard University since 1981, and she has worked as psychiatric director at the Women’s Mental Health Collective in Somerville Massachusetts since 1973.
