Judge William L. Dawson

Judge William L. Dawson is a jurist, author, motivational speaker, and certified yoga instructor who serves as the administrative and presiding judge of the East Cleveland Municipal Court. Having grown up in the community over which he now presides, Dawson draws on personal experience with the challenges faced by local youth, shaping his approach to law and public service.

Before his judicial appointment, Dawson practiced criminal defense, representing clients in Ohio's municipal and state courts, the Ohio Supreme Court, the United States District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Ohio, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. His legal work covered a range of cases, from traffic violations to murder.

As a judge, Dawson is recognized for his innovative approach to justice and community engagement. He broadcasts many of his hearings live on TikTok, amassing a large following and previously sharing courtroom proceedings on Twitter via Periscope. Dawson has stated that his goal is to provide transparency and education about the legal system, aiming to "bring light, integrity and information about the legal system to viewers." His work has been featured in national media, including Rolling Stone Magazine, CNN, Discovery ID, the "Chaos in The Court" TV show, Court TV, Court Network, Breathe Magazine, and Monarch Magazine.

Dawson is also an author whose books focus on empowerment and legal literacy. His works include "The Legal Matrix, How the System is Controlling Your Life" and its companion workbook, "99 Problems...How Your Failures, Flops & Flaws Can Lead to Your Greatness," and "The Cycle Breaker." These publications address topics such as overcoming obstacles, personal transformation, and understanding the legal system.

Beyond the courtroom and his writing, Dawson leads the "Finish First" probation program for convicted individuals and a version for junior and high school students. He founded "Cycle Breakers," a rehabilitation program designed to help defendants access resources and develop positive habits, including yoga. Dawson is also the founder and executive director of the Annie L. Dawson Foundation for Justice, Education & Achievement, which provides mentoring and scholarships for college-bound high school students. He serves on the Ohio Supreme Court Commission on Continuing Legal Education.

A 500-hour certified yoga instructor, Dawson established the Yoga Lab Movement and Yoga Studio to further support personal growth and wellness. As a keynote speaker, he addresses topics such as anti-racism, civil rights, diversity and inclusion, government, law, leadership, social activism, and social justice, offering audiences insight into justice, resilience, and personal development.
