Joseph Goldstein

Joseph Goldstein is recognized for his role in introducing Buddhist meditation to Western audiences. Goldstein is one of the first American vipassana teachers and co-founded the Insight Meditation Society with Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg. He has served as a resident guiding teacher and has led retreats focused on insight (vipassana) and lovingkindness (metta) meditation.

Goldstein’s interest in Buddhism began during his time as a Peace Corps volunteer in Thailand. Since then, he has studied and practiced various forms of Buddhist meditation under teachers from India, Burma, and Tibet. After his Peace Corps service, Goldstein spent several years in India, including studying Theravada Buddhism with Anagarika Sri Munindra in Bodh Gaya.

Goldstein started his teaching career at Naropa Institute in Boulder, Colorado, where he met Kornfield. Together, they designed and led meditation courses. He later co-founded the Insight Meditation Society in Barre, Massachusetts, and contributed to the establishment of the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and the IMS Forest Refuge for long-term retreats. Goldstein’s efforts have played a significant role in making vipassana and mindfulness practices accessible in the United States.

As an author, Goldstein has written several books on meditation and mindfulness, including "Mindfulness: A Practical Guide to Awakening," "A Heart Full of Peace," "One Dharma: The Emerging Western Buddhism," "Insight Meditation: The Practice of Freedom," and "The Experience of Insight." He is also co-author of "Seeking the Heart of Wisdom" and "Insight Meditation: A Correspondence Course." In his writing, Goldstein explores the commonalities among different Buddhist traditions and draws on foundational texts such as the Satipatthana Sutta.

Goldstein’s teachings are featured on platforms including the Ten Percent Happier App, the Waking Up with Sam Harris App, and the Dharma Seed library. He also hosts the "Insight Hour with Joseph Goldstein" podcast on the Be Here Now Network, where he shares mindfulness and meditation teachings. Goldstein regularly undertakes extended meditation retreats, maintaining a personal commitment to the practices he teaches. His work continues to influence the fields of mindfulness, meditation, and contemporary Buddhism.
