
John Beilein is recognized as a tactically innovative coach in college basketball, with a career spanning more than four decades. Beilein compiled a career record of 829-468 (.639) during 41 years as a collegiate head coach, recording 20-plus win seasons on 23 occasions and finishing with a winning record in 35 seasons. He coached at various levels, including community college, NAIA, Division II, Division I, and the NBA, serving as a head coach at every stop.
Beilein's coaching career includes positions with the West Virginia Mountaineers, Richmond Spiders, Canisius Golden Griffins, Le Moyne College, Nazareth College, and Erie Community College. At Richmond, he led the Spiders to a 100-53 record and an NCAA Tournament berth. At West Virginia, the Mountaineers won 104 games in five seasons, reaching the NCAA Elite Eight, the Sweet 16, and securing an NIT championship.
At the University of Michigan, Beilein became the program's all-time winningest coach, compiling a 278-150 record over 12 seasons. He led the Wolverines to two Big Ten Conference regular-season titles, two conference tournament championships, and nine NCAA Tournament berths. The 2013 Wolverines finished as national runners-up, tying the then-school record with 31 wins. Beilein guided Michigan to two National Championship appearances and helped nine players reach the NBA. He earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors and was named National Coach of the Year by CBS Sports. His teams were known for sharing the basketball and limiting turnovers, ranking in the top 10 nationally in fewest turnovers nine times at Michigan.
After Michigan, Beilein served as head coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers and later as a senior advisor of player development for the Detroit Pistons. He taught a leadership course at the University of Michigan and worked as an analyst for Big Ten Network. Beilein also consulted for Michigan Medicine, advising on leadership training, culture building, and fundraising initiatives, and continued his advisory work with the Detroit Pistons, focusing on team dynamics and organizational development.
Beilein's career has been recognized with induction into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame and multiple Hall of Fame honors. He received the NABC International Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to basketball. Beilein remains active in speaking engagements, guest appearances at the University of Michigan, and coaching clinics, where he shares insights on basketball strategy, player development, and leadership in high-pressure environments.
