Johann Koss

Johann Olav Koss is a Norwegian speed skater recognized for his dominance in long-distance speed skating during the 1990s. Koss made his Olympic debut at the Winter Olympics, finishing seventh in the 5,000 meters just days after surgery for an inflamed pancreas. He went on to win gold in the 1,500 meters and silver in the 10,000 meters. At the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, competing on home soil in the final year of his career, Koss won three gold medals and set new world records in every event, two of which remained unbeaten until the introduction of the clap skate. In the 10,000 meters, he improved his own world record by nearly 13 seconds, winning by 18.70 seconds, the second largest margin of victory in Olympic history.

With four Olympic speed skating gold medals, 10 world records, and three world championships, Koss is among the most decorated athletes in winter sports history. He was named Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year, together with Bonnie Blair, and received the Oscar Mathisen Award three times. The Dutch team presented Koss with a golden butterfly, an honor typically reserved for their own gold medalists. He was ranked number one on the Adelskalender, the all-time allround speed skating ranking, for a total of 1,998 days across three periods.

Koss’s impact extends beyond competitive sport. Inspired by a visit to Eritrea, he donated $30,000 to Olympic Aid and encouraged his Norwegian Olympic teammates to contribute as well. He auctioned his speed skates, raising another $85,000 for war victims in Sarajevo. Koss was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and advocated for children with disabilities and those affected by war. He founded Right To Play, a Canadian-based international humanitarian organization that uses sport and play to support the development of children and youth in disadvantaged areas worldwide, operating in more than 20 countries and reaching over one million children each week.

After retiring from speed skating, Koss earned his MBBS degree at the University of Queensland in Australia and completed his Executive MBA at the Joseph L. Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto. He holds honorary doctorates from several universities, including Brock University, the University of Calgary, Vrije Universiteit Brussels, and the University of Agder in Norway. Koss was made an Honorary Member of the Order of Canada, and his humanitarian honors include the Jackie Robinson Humanitarian Award, the Carter Center Child Survival Award, and the UNICEF Honorary Award for Outstanding Support to Children. He was inducted into the Olympians for Life project for using sport to make a positive impact globally.

In addition to his athletic and humanitarian work, Koss founded Fair Sport, a nonprofit foundation offering financial and legal assistance to whistleblowers with information about cheating in international competition. Fair Sport provides housing, criminal defense, immigration applications, and psychological counseling to whistleblowers, supported by private donations and commitments from global law firms. As a keynote speaker, Koss addresses topics such as leadership, entrepreneurship, ethics, sustainability, youth development, and corporate strategy, drawing on his experience in Olympic sport, medicine, social entrepreneurship, and global advocacy.
