Joanne P. McCallie

Joanne P. McCallie, known as Coach P, is recognized as one of the most accomplished women's basketball coaches in NCAA history. McCallie is a Hall of Fame coach, author, and mental health advocate. Over a head coaching career spanning nearly three decades, McCallie accumulated 646 victories, 22 seasons with 20 or more wins, 21 NCAA Tournament appearances, and eight conference championships across three institutions. She became the first Division I head coach to win a conference title in four different conferences—the ACC, Big Ten, America East, and North Atlantic—and the first Division I coach to be named conference coach of the year in four different conferences. Before her first head coaching position, McCallie served as an assistant coach at Auburn University, where the Tigers appeared in two national championship games and reached the NCAA Elite Eight.

McCallie began her head coaching career at the University of Maine, guiding the Black Bears to a 167–73 record, six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, four North Atlantic Conference and America East Conference Championships, and five regular-season conference titles. She then moved to Michigan State, where she was named National Coach of the Year after leading the Spartans to the Big Ten title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament championship game. McCallie later became head coach at Duke, where she led the Blue Devils to a 150-54 record in ACC play, four consecutive league regular season titles, three ACC Tournament championships, 10 NCAA Tournament selections, and four straight Elite Eight appearances. McCallie became the fastest coach in ACC history to reach 300 wins at a member institution and the 15th-fastest coach in NCAA history to reach 600 victories.

Diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 30, McCallie managed her mental health while continuing her coaching career and later became a mental health advocate and speaker. During her tenure at Duke, she established annual Mental Wealth Day games to raise awareness about mental health and spoke at the ACC Mental Health and Wellness Summit. McCallie is the author of two books: "Choice, Not Chance: Rules for Building a Fierce Competitor" and "Secret Warrior: A Coach and Fighter, On and Off the Court." "Secret Warrior" details her mental health journey and the challenges faced within the sports world.

After her coaching career, McCallie has focused on mental health advocacy and public speaking, sharing her experiences to educate others on mental health, leadership, coaching, and resilience. As the founder of CoachP4Life, she draws on her personal experiences with bipolar disorder and professional challenges, emphasizing her philosophy of "Choice, not Chance." McCallie has extensive media experience, including radio shows, podcasts, and four years as a WNBA color commentator. A cancer survivor, McCallie addresses topics such as leadership, resilience, sports, and mental health, providing insight into the intersection of athletics and mental wellness.
