Joanne Lipman

Joanne Lipman is an American journalist and editor who has led several major news organizations. Lipman has served as editor-in-chief of USA Today, USA Today Network, Conde Nast Portfolio, and The Wall Street Journal's Weekend Journal, guiding these organizations to six Pulitzer Prizes. She was the first woman to permanently hold the editor-in-chief title at USA Today.

Lipman began her career as a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, rising to deputy managing editor—the first woman in that role—and supervising coverage that earned three Pulitzer Prizes. At the Journal, she created Weekend Journal and Personal Journal and oversaw the launch of the paper's Saturday edition. She later became founding editor-in-chief of Conde Nast Portfolio and Portfolio.com, which received National Magazine and Loeb Awards. Lipman also served as the first chief content officer of Gannett, overseeing USA Today and the USA Today Network, which includes more than 100 metro newspapers such as Detroit Free Press, Cincinnati Enquirer, and Arizona Republic, and a newsroom of over 3,000 journalists, leading the organization to three Pulitzer Prizes.

Lipman is the author of three books, including "That's What She Said: What Men Need to Know (and Women Need to Tell Them) About Working Together" and "NEXT: The Power of Reinvention in Life and Work." She is also co-author, with Melanie Kupchynsky, of the music memoir "Strings Attached." Her writing on gender equity, leadership, and the future of work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, Time, Fortune, Newsweek, and Harvard Business Review.

Lipman is the inaugural Peretsman Scully Distinguished Journalism Fellow at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, a journalism lecturer at Yale University, and an on-air contributor at CNBC. She has received the Matrix Award from New York Women in Communications for achievement in the newspaper category. Lipman is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the boards of World Editors Forum and Yale Daily News, among other advisory roles. As a public speaker, she has addressed audiences at the World Economic Forum in Davos, the United Nations, Aspen Ideas Festival, TEDx, International Lean In Conference, Federal Reserve Board, and Milken Institute Global Conference, focusing on leadership, media, and workplace transformation.
