Jeremy Grantham

Jeremy Grantham is a British investor and market strategist known for his expertise in asset management and financial markets. Grantham studied economics at the University of Sheffield and earned an MBA from Harvard Business School before entering the investment field. He began his investment career as an economist with Royal Dutch Shell. Before co-founding GMO, Grantham was a co-founder of Batterymarch Financial Management, where he advocated for commercial indexing in the early 1970s. He later co-founded GMO, a Boston-based global investment management firm.

Grantham established his reputation by identifying speculative asset bubbles as they developed. He is recognized for forecasting major asset bubbles, including Japan's market peak, the dot-com collapse, and the global financial crisis, often positioning GMO to underweight overvalued equities ahead of downturns. Grantham's investment philosophy centers on mean reversion, contrarian strategies, resource constraints, and behavioral excesses in markets. He and his wife, Hannelore, co-founded the Grantham Foundation for the Protection of the Environment to address climate change and environmental degradation. The Grantham Foundation has contributed to the Grantham Institute for Climate Change at Imperial College London and the Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment at the London School of Economics. Grantham has dedicated the majority of his personal wealth to climate change initiatives. The Granthams are signatories of The Giving Pledge and have donated a significant portion of their wealth to environmental causes.

Grantham was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE), and received the Carnegie Medal for Philanthropy with Hannelore for leadership in climate change activities.
