Jana Schmieding

Jana Schmieding is a Mniconjou and Sicangu Lakota actor, writer, comedian, and podcaster recognized for her contributions to contemporary television and Indigenous representation in media. Schmieding is known for her work on "Rutherford Falls," where she draws on her lived experience, comedic skills, and commitment to cultural advocacy. She studied theater arts at the University of Oregon, where she served as co-director of the Multicultural Center and was a member of the Native American Student Union. Her time at the university fostered her interest in activism and collaboration with communities of color.

After college, Schmieding moved to New York City, where she spent 10 years teaching middle and high school while performing improv at Magnet Theater. She became active in the city's improv and sketch comedy scene, writing, performing, and directing regularly. Schmieding later relocated to Los Angeles, working at an education-related nonprofit and transitioning from acting to writing. During this period, she hosted the podcast "Woman of Size," which explored discrimination related to body size and featured conversations with a range of guests. Through this podcast, Schmieding connected with Sierra Teller Ornelas, who later hired her for "Rutherford Falls."

Schmieding stars in and serves as a staff writer on "Rutherford Falls," the first Native sitcom, co-created by Sierra Teller Ornelas, Mike Schur, and Ed Helms. This role marked Schmieding's first staff writing position and first starring role in television. She portrays Reagan Wells in the series, which has been recognized for its impact on Indigenous storytelling and representation. Schmieding continued as both a writer and co-star when the series was renewed for a second season.

In addition to her work on "Rutherford Falls," Schmieding appears as Bev, the clinic receptionist and one of the aunties, in the series "Reservation Dogs." She also developed "Aunty Chuck," a project inspired by the American comedy "Uncle Buck," which was supported by Sundance Native Labs. Schmieding is a keynote speaker on topics including Native American heritage, Indigenous identity, comedy, entertainment, women, diversity, and inclusion. Throughout her career, she has advocated for authentic Indigenous representation in television and film, challenging stereotypes and promoting nuanced portrayals of Native characters in the entertainment industry.
