Jackie Hill Perry is a poet, hip-hop artist, Bible teacher, and author whose work addresses faith, sexuality, identity, and redemption within Christian culture. Perry first gained recognition for her Christian spoken word performances and has contributed to publications such as Washington Times, The 700 Club, Desiring God, and The Gospel Coalition. She is a self-described former lesbian.
Perry's creative journey began after her conversion to Christianity. She returned to church, began writing poetry, and performed her first spoken word piece at a P4CM poetry conference. Through the Passion for Christ Movement, she debuted her public performance of "My Life as a Stud," which explores her pre-conversion identity and repentance. Perry's music career advanced when Humble Beast signed her as an artist, leading to the release of her debut album, "The Art of Joy," produced by Beautiful Eulogy. She later released the hip-hop album "Crescendo" and signed to Reach Records, releasing the single "First Draft."
As an author, Perry has contributed to Christian literature with works such as her memoir, "Gay Girl, Good God: The Story of Who I Was and Who God Has Always Been," which details her personal background and experience of repentance and faith. She authored "Holier Than Thou: How God's Holiness Helps Us Trust Him," a book that explores the relationship between trust and the holiness of God. Her book "Upon Waking" became a bestseller in USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Publisher's Weekly. Perry also wrote the Bible study "Jude: Contending for the Faith in Today's Culture" for women and teen girls.
In addition to her writing and music, Perry is a speaker and teacher. She and her husband participate in Poets in Autumn, a global tour of Christian spoken word artists. Perry introduced the daily podcast "Through the ESV Bible in a Year," which features sequential Old and New Testament readings with reflective commentary. Her speaking engagements include addresses at major Christian gatherings focused on scriptural fidelity. Perry has written for Christian ministry organizations, addressing the intersection of homosexuality and Christianity, including her article "Love Letter to a Lesbian" for Desiring God.
Perry's work integrates poetic artistry, hip-hop, and theological teaching, making her a prominent figure in Christian music, literature, and ministry.
