J.L. King

J.L. King is a New York Times bestselling author, publisher, and HIV/STD activist known for his exploration of human behavior and public health, particularly within the African American community. His work addresses topics such as the effects of health issues on minorities and the impact of sexual orientation on educational environments. Before his writing career, King worked as a sales and marketing executive for an Atlanta-based publishing company and served in the U.S. Air Force.

King's debut book, "On the Down Low: A Journey Into the Lives of Straight Black Men Who Sleep with Men," appeared on the New York Times Best Seller list for more than 30 consecutive weeks. In researching the book, King interviewed 2,400 men between the ages of 18 and 78. Drawing from personal experience, he discussed living a double life and the process of self-acceptance. The book's success led to multiple appearances on "The Oprah Winfrey Show," recognition in Ebony Magazine's 50 Most Intriguing Blacks, a cover feature in Jet magazine, and interviews with major media outlets. King later authored "Coming Up from the Down Low: The Journey to Acceptance, Healing, and Honest Love," as well as additional works including "Love on a Two-Way Street" and "CP Time: Why Some People Are Always Late."

King's public platform includes television appearances on the Oprah Winfrey Show, PBS, BET, CNN, The Discovery Network, and more than 80 local news programs. His expertise has been cited in over 100 national publications, including Jet, Ebony, People, the New York Times, Chicago Sun Times, and Essence Magazine. King produced "The DL Exposed," a documentary broadcast on Black Entertainment Television, furthering discussions on sexuality, identity, and public health.

As a publisher, King owns Urban Moon Publishing, a self-publishing company focused on amplifying minority writers. He has served on several boards and contributed to the community by raising funds for homeless LGBTQ youth, hosting fundraisers, and supporting outreach efforts for men who have sex with men. King founded the National Black Gay Fathers organization to encourage involvement in children's lives and has served as president and CEO of The Lillie Mae King Foundation, which provides financial support for Black families affected by HIV/AIDS.

King's contributions to American culture and public health discourse have earned him recognition, including a place in Ebony magazine's 50 Most Intriguing Blacks, an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Literary Work, and the Breakout Male Author of the Year award from The African American Literary Awards Show. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has acknowledged King for raising awareness about public health issues. Through his books, documentary work, and advocacy, King addresses complex topics related to identity, health, and community engagement.
