Inge Missmahl

Inge Missmahl is a Jungian psychoanalyst and humanitarian whose career path spans from dance to analytical psychology and global mental health. Missmahl's work in Kabul highlighted the widespread prevalence of depressive symptoms and trauma in a population affected by decades of violence, poverty, and insecurity. In a country of 30 million people with limited access to psychiatric care, she identified the urgent need for scalable mental health solutions.

Missmahl founded the psychosocial Project Kabul for Caritas Germany, training Afghan men and women to provide psychosocial counseling in 15 centers across the city. The project delivered free treatment to 12,000 clients, addressing mental health stigma and gender barriers. Her approach emphasized culturally sensitive, pragmatic interventions rather than importing Western psychiatric models, recognizing the limitations of fast, pathology-based diagnosis and pharmacological treatment in post-conflict settings. As a result of her efforts, psychosocial counseling became integrated into the Afghan health system.

Building on her experience, Missmahl developed "Value-Based Counseling," a methodology rooted in her work as a Jungian analyst in Afghanistan and other high-stress environments. This psychodynamic, short-term intervention uses a salutogenic approach to restore individuals' sense of coherence and self-efficacy through structured, non-directive conversation. The model avoids pathologizing symptoms and addresses challenges arising from trauma, social disruption, migration, and loss of livelihood. The approach has demonstrated scalability, with 50,000 treated mental health cases and national implementation in Afghanistan's health care system.

Missmahl has served as Technical Advisor for Mental Health for the Afghan government on behalf of the European Union and is the founder of the International Psychosocial Organisation (IPSO). IPSO is a humanitarian not-for-profit organization based in Germany and Afghanistan, specializing in mental health, psychosocial support services, and sociocultural dialogue to promote peace and social cohesion. IPSO has reached over 200,000 beneficiaries worldwide, delivering more than 67,000 psychosocial support sessions both in person and virtually, with advisors from 21 countries providing services in 16 languages.

Missmahl's work has been recognized through her selection as an Ashoka Fellow, and she has addressed global audiences through TED Talks, including "Bringing Peace to the Minds of Afghanistan" and "A Human-Powered Empathy Engine" at TEDxBerlinSalon. In the context of global mental health, Missmahl has introduced scalable systems to support and empower individuals facing psychosocial stress. She continues to advance access to psychosocial support, including through the digital platform Ipso e-care. Missmahl's career reflects a commitment to culturally informed mental health care and humanitarian innovation.
