Ian MacNaughton

Ian MacNaughton is the CEO and principal of The MacNaughton Group, a multigenerational real estate development and investment company based in Honolulu, Hawaii. The MacNaughton Group focuses on real estate development, investment, and property management, with a portfolio that includes luxury residential, retail, hospitality, and healthcare projects.

Before joining The MacNaughton Group, MacNaughton established a career in finance on the mainland, working in the investment banking division of UBS, followed by roles in investment management at Goldman Sachs and private equity at Starwood Capital Group. After his tenure at Starwood Capital, MacNaughton returned to Hawaii to join the family business, bringing a global perspective to the company's operations and leadership.

Under MacNaughton's direction, The MacNaughton Group has co-developed luxury condominiums in Honolulu, developed more than 3 million square feet of retail space in Hawaii, and acquired hotels and other commercial properties. Notable projects include "Park Lane Ala Moana," a luxury residential development, and "Arden Waikiki," a restaurant at the Lotus Hotel in Waikiki. The company has also expanded its portfolio with acquisitions such as a 290-unit luxury multifamily rental community in Arizona and a 796-unit community in Seattle, developed in partnership with Quarterra. MacNaughton also co-founded BlackSand Capital, a private equity real estate investment firm, with investments in properties such as Pearlridge Center, "Park Lane" at Ala Moana Center, and the redevelopment of King's Village in Waikiki.

In addition to his work in real estate, MacNaughton has served as a principal shareholder and director of the parent company of Zephyr Insurance Company and as chairman of Twin Farms Collection LLC, a luxury hospitality property in Vermont. He is an active member of professional organizations including the Urban Land Institute, International Council of Shopping Centers, National Association of Industrial and Office Properties, Fisher Center for Real Estate & Urban Economics Policy Advisory Board, Hawaii Business Roundtable, and Young Presidents' Organization. MacNaughton also serves on the board of directors of the American Red Cross of Hawaii and The MacNaughton Group Foundation.

The MacNaughton Group has played a role in shaping Hawaii's commercial landscape by facilitating the entry of major retailers such as Costco, Target, Kmart, and Petco. The company supports local communities through philanthropic contributions to Hawaii nonprofits and employee involvement in organizations focused on education, healthcare, sustainability, homelessness, job creation, and the arts.
