In his teaching, Burns highlights the distinctions between the Southern Civil Rights Movement and the Midwest’s own social reform efforts, helping African American students understand the regional strategies used to challenge and dismantle institutionalized racism. His presentations feature dynamic figures such as Carl B. Stokes, Cleveland’s first Black mayor, and the Black interest groups that transformed political influence into community empowerment. Burns also addresses the era’s human rights violations—including police brutality, segregation, and corporate discrimination—to provide a fuller understanding of the challenges faced and the progress achieved.
