Gregg D. Caruso

Gregg D. Caruso is Professor of Ethics and Director of the Patrick J. Waide Center for Applied Ethics at Fairfield University. He is also Honorary Professor of Philosophy at Macquarie University and Co-Director of the Justice Without Retribution Network at the University of Aberdeen. His research focuses on free will, moral responsibility, criminal punishment, business ethics, neuroethics, and applied issues in moral, legal, and political philosophy.

Caruso is the author of several books which have been translated into numerous languages, and over forty journal articles and book chapters. His books include "How to Live Well Without Free Will" (due in 2026), "Neurolaw," "Moral Responsibility Reconsidered" (with Derk Pereboom), "Rejecting Retributivism: Free Will, Punishment, and Criminal Justice," "Just Deserts: Debating Free Will" (with Daniel C. Dennett), "Public Health and Safety: The Social Determinants of Health and Criminal Behavior," and "Free Will and Consciousness: A Determinist Account of the Illusion of Free Will." He is at work on another book entitled "Putting People Before Profit: Business, Ethics, and Society."

Caruso was featured in "Free Will? A Documentary." He has also been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers from around the world, including New Philosopher, Knack, Corriere della Sera Sette, The Guardian, and Sens psychologia dla ciebie. In addition to his scholarly writings, he has published popular pieces in Aeon, The Philosopher's Magazine, Arc Digital, Psychology Today, and The Philosopher.
