Goose Gossage

Rich Gossage, known as "Goose," is recognized as a significant relief pitcher in Major League Baseball history. Gossage played 22 seasons, contributing to the evolution of the modern closer role. He was selected by the Chicago White Sox in the ninth round of the Major League Baseball draft and made his major league debut with the team. Gossage had a breakout season leading the American League in saves and outs per relief appearance.

After a season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Gossage signed with the New York Yankees as a free agent. During his tenure as the Yankees' closer, he was named to four All-Star teams, recorded 150 saves, and posted a 2.10 ERA. Gossage's fastball was clocked at 103 mph during an All-Star Game, and he led the American League in saves three times. From 1977 through 1983, he maintained an earned run average under 2.62, including a 0.77 mark in one season, and finished third in voting for both the MVP Award and Cy Young Award as the Yankees secured a division title. Gossage recorded the final out to clinch a division, league, or World Series title seven times.

Gossage later signed with the San Diego Padres, where his 10 wins and 25 saves contributed to the team's first World Series appearance. In the National League Championship Series, he pitched in all three of San Diego's consecutive victories to advance to the World Series, earning a save in Game 5. Over his 22-year career, Gossage played for nine teams, with his most notable years spent with the Yankees and Padres.

Upon retirement, Gossage's career statistics included a 124-107 record, 3.01 ERA, 1,002 games, 310 saves, 1,809.1 innings pitched, and 1,502 strikeouts. He was selected to eight All-Star Games as a reliever and once as a starting pitcher. The Baseball Hall of Fame inducted Gossage, making him one of a select group of relief specialists in Cooperstown. According to wins above replacement (WAR), his 1975 season is considered the most valuable by a relief pitcher in MLB history.

Beyond his playing career, Gossage has remained active in the baseball community. He authored the autobiography "The Goose is Loose" and lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where he supports youth sports. Gossage continues to be a prominent voice in baseball, offering candid perspectives on the evolution of relief pitching and the closer role.
