General Rick Hillier

General Rick Hillier is a retired Canadian Forces officer who served as Chief of the Defence Staff, the highest-ranking position in the Canadian military. Hillier commanded troops from platoon to multinational formation levels across Canada, Europe, Asia, and the United States. His roles included serving as the first Canadian Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army’s III Corps at Fort Hood, Texas, and leading NATO’s Stabilization Force Multinational Division Southwest in Bosnia-Herzegovina. As Commander of the Land Force Command and NATO’s International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, Hillier managed complex military operations and advocated for ground troops and increased resources, contributing to the restoration of the Canadian armed forces’ domestic reputation.

Hillier’s leadership style and strategic vision shaped his tenure as Chief of the Defence Staff, where he oversaw Canada’s mission in Afghanistan and publicly addressed military funding challenges.
