Garrett Erin Reisman is an American engineer and former NASA astronaut. He was a backup crew member for Expedition 15 and joined Expedition 16 aboard the International Space Station for a short time before becoming a member of Expedition 17. He returned to Earth on June 14, 2008 on board STS-124 on Space Shuttle Discovery. He was a member of the STS-132 mission that traveled to the International Space Station aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis.
Dr. Reisman was selected by NASA as a mission specialist astronaut in 1998, and went on to complete his first mission aboard the space shuttle, Endeavour. On this first trip, he was dropped off for a 95 day stay aboard The International Space Station before returning to Earth aboard the space shuttle, Discovery. During his multiple missions, he performed 3 spacewalks, acted as a flight engineer, and operated the space station robot arm.
In 2011, Dr. Reisman left NASA to join SpaceX in Hawthorne, California where he became the Director of Space Operations. In this job capacity, he worked with NASA to prepare SpaceX's Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon spacecraft to carry astronauts, and maintained responsibility for all human interfaces in the crew vehicle; thus making him a major player in both the American space program's historical past and future. In 2018, Reisman announced he would leave his position at SpaceX, but remain as a "consultant," stating he could not pass up a job to teach human spaceflight at the nearby University of Southern California. He serves as a Professor of Astronautics Practice at the USC's Viterbi School of Engineering.
Dr. Reisman will give his audience an insider's view into what it was like to launch into space, see the Earth from orbit, do a spacewalk, live and work in space, and re-enter the Earth's atmosphere. In addition, he provides a behind-the-scenes look at what is to come next in the journey for human spaceflight; a whole new golden age of exploration.
