Frank Anderson

Dr. Frank Anderson, MD, is a trauma treatment expert, psychiatrist, and psychotherapist with more than three decades of experience in understanding and addressing psychological pain and trauma. Anderson completed his residency and served as a clinical instructor in psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, where his focus on trauma and mental health developed. His career began at Bessel van der Kolk's trauma center, where he regularly encountered complex trauma cases, shaping his clinical approach.

As a global speaker on trauma and dissociation, Anderson teaches brain-based psychotherapy and integrates neuroscience with the Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of therapy. He serves as a lead trainer at the IFS Institute under Richard Schwartz and maintains a long-standing affiliation with Bessel van der Kolk and the Trauma Research Foundation. Anderson frequently lectures on the neurobiology of PTSD and dissociation, and his written contributions include co-authoring the "Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual" and authoring chapters such as "Who's Taking What: Connecting Neuroscience, Psychopharmacology and Internal Family Systems for Trauma."

Anderson is a member of the New England Society Studying Trauma and Dissociation and the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation. He is the author of "Transcending Trauma," the memoir "To Be Loved: A Story of Truth, Trauma, and Transformation," and co-author of "Internal Family Systems Skills Training Manual." His memoir draws on his personal experience with childhood trauma, providing insight into resilience and healing.

Anderson is the co-founder of The Trauma Institute and Trauma Informed Media, organizations focused on trauma awareness, education, and integration. Trauma Informed Media, led by Anderson and a team of entertainment and mental health professionals, works to improve mental health portrayals in media and offers consultation and production services to corporations, clinicians, content creators, and filmmakers. Anderson has collaborated with Julianne Hough to develop a trauma-informed dance movement component for the Kinrgy Dance Program.
