Francis Fukuyama

Francis Fukuyama is a political scientist specializing in democracy, governance, and international political economy. He serves as the Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at Stanford University's Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and as director of the Susan Ford Dorsey Master's in International Policy at Stanford. Fukuyama is also a faculty member at the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law. He is editor-in-chief of "American Purpose," an online journal focused on liberal democracy in the United States and internationally.

Fukuyama gained international attention with his essay, "The End of History?," published in The National Interest. The essay generated significant discussion among political thinkers and policymakers worldwide. His book, "The End of History and the Last Man," has been translated into more than 20 languages. Fukuyama is recognized for his analysis of liberal democracy's trajectory following the Cold War and his argument regarding the end of ideological evolution in global politics. His "Origins" series—"The Origins of Political Order" and "Political Order and Political Decay"—serves as a continuation of the themes explored in his earlier work.

Fukuyama's scholarship addresses key issues in political thought, biotechnology, and public policy. His publications include "Our Posthuman Future," which examines biotechnology's influence on human development, as well as "America at the Crossroads: Democracy, Power, and the Neoconservative Legacy" and "Trust: The Social Virtues and the Creation of Prosperity." In "Liberalism and Its Discontents," Fukuyama analyzes the impact of ideological polarization on civil society.

Before joining Stanford, Fukuyama worked in the Political Science Department at RAND Corporation and on the Policy Planning Staff at the U.S. Department of State. He held academic positions at George Mason University and Johns Hopkins University and served on the President's Council on Bioethics. Fukuyama is a non-resident fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and the Center for Global Development.

Fukuyama has received recognition for his contributions to political science and public administration, including the Centennial Medal from Harvard University and the Fred Riggs Award for Lifetime Achievement in International and Comparative Public Administration. He holds honorary doctorates from institutions in the United States, Japan, Denmark, and Poland. Fukuyama's work continues to inform discussions on democracy, political order, and the challenges facing liberal societies.
