Filipe Masetti Leite

Filipe Masetti Leite occupies a rare place in the history of modern exploration. The youngest person to cross the Americas on horseback, he is also one of only three men in the world to complete the 25,000-kilometer (16,000-mile) journey from Alaska to Ushuaia, Argentina. The scale of that achievement is difficult to grasp: Twelve men have walked on the moon, and more than 5,000 people have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Only three have crossed the Americas on horseback. Masetti Leite is one of those Long Riders.

His journey unfolded across nearly a decade of remote wilderness, political borders and cultural divides, demanding extraordinary endurance, adaptability and trust in strangers. Along the way, he faced moments of real danger and profound humanity, from escaping grizzly bears in the Yukon to sleeping in the homes of drug lords in Central America. In one of the trek’s most moving episodes, he was asked by a grieving brother to carry his sister’s ashes across part of the continent, transforming the journey into an act of shared remembrance.
