Father Richard Rohr

Fr. Richard Rohr is a Franciscan priest and internationally recognized spiritual teacher whose work has shaped modern understandings of Christian mysticism and contemplative practice. He founded the Center for Action and Contemplation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1987 as a place to nurture both inner transformation and social engagement. His teachings emphasize the Franciscan path of simplicity, compassion, and solidarity with the marginalized, and he has become a leading voice in articulating the Perennial Tradition, which highlights the shared wisdom at the heart of all spiritual paths.

Rohr is the author of numerous books exploring themes of faith, transformation, and spiritual growth. His works include “Everything Belongs,” “Adam’s Return,” “The Naked Now,” “Breathing Under Water,” “Falling Upward,” “Immortal Diamond,” and “Eager to Love: The Alternative Way of Francis of Assisi.” Later titles, including “The Divine Dance: The Trinity and Your Transformation,” co-written with Mike Morrell, and “The Universal Christ,” reflect his vision of an inclusive, incarnational faith that sees Christ in all people and creation. His most recent works, “What Do We Do With Evil?” and “The Tears of Things,” continue to examine profound spiritual questions and offer insight for navigating the challenges of the modern world.

As academic dean of the Living School for Action and Contemplation, Rohr guided students in integrating deep spiritual wisdom with practical engagement in the world. The school’s mission reflects his lifelong commitment to nurturing compassionate, contemplative leaders who bring healing and justice through awareness of God’s presence in all creation.

In 2017 Rohr was diagnosed with cancer, and in the years that followed, health challenges gradually led him to reduce his public speaking and teaching schedule. He eventually retired from active leadership at the Center for Action and Contemplation, where he now serves as founder and visionary in an emeritus role. Even in retirement, his writings, recorded teachings, and ongoing programs at the center continue to reach a global audience. His work remains dedicated to awakening a deeper consciousness that unites action and contemplation, inspiring countless people across faith traditions to live with greater compassion, humility, and love.
