Evan Rabble Henshaw-Plath

Evan Henshaw-Plath is a technologist and activist whose career spans software engineering, civic technology, and social justice. Known by his online handle Rabble, Henshaw-Plath has developed tools aimed at empowering communities and challenging centralized internet structures. He was a technical founder of the independent media network Indymedia, contributing to the infrastructure that supported grassroots journalists and organizers during global protests, including the WTO demonstrations in Seattle.

Henshaw-Plath played a significant role in the digital landscape as the first employee and lead developer at Odeo, a podcasting startup, where he architected the company's Ruby on Rails web application platform. When Odeo shifted focus, he led the engineering team through a transition that resulted in the creation of Twitter. The concept for Twitter drew on his earlier work with researchers at MIT on TXTmob, a text message-based social network used for real-time coordination during political protests at the Republican and Democratic National Conventions, which influenced Twitter's development.

After Odeo, Henshaw-Plath continued to work at the intersection of technology and civic engagement. At Yahoo Brickhouse, he served as lead web developer and architected FireEagle, the company's first Ruby on Rails application. He later founded Cubox, a Ruby on Rails consultancy in Montevideo, Uruguay, which was acquired by Neo Innovation. Henshaw-Plath also served as chief technology officer of Digital Garage – Neo, where he contributed to the growth of the lean product consultancy before its acquisition by Pivotal. He held the position of vice president of engineering at Quantstamp, focusing on blockchain security and smart contract-powered applications, and conducted research at the MIT Media Lab Center for Civic Media on sustainable social media ecosystems and platform cooperatives.

Henshaw-Plath has focused on developing decentralized social platforms, founding Planetary.social, a decentralized social media app, and co-founding Nos.social, an ad-free platform built on the Nostr protocol that emphasizes user ownership of accounts, feeds, and connections. He also launched "Divine," a short-form video platform built on open protocols, designed to prioritize creative control for users in the context of algorithm-driven and AI-generated content. Henshaw-Plath advocates for a Social Media Bill of Rights, supporting user privacy, data ownership, and the right to exit platforms.
