Evan Bates

​Evan Bates is an ice dancer and three-time World Champion, celebrated for his longevity, artistry, and leadership in the sport. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Bates began skating at the age of four and transitioned to ice dance in his early teens. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 2013 with a degree in Organizational Studies.​

Bates first gained international recognition with partner Emily Samuelson, with whom he won the 2008 World Junior Championship and competed at the 2010 Winter Olympics. In 2011, he teamed up with his now-wife Madison Chock, forming one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in U.S. figure skating history.

Chock and Bates have represented the United States at three Olympic Games (2014, 2018, and 2022), earning a gold medal in the team event at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics following the disqualification of the Russian team due to a doping violation. Over the course of their partnership, they have become known for their innovative programs that blend cutting-edge music selections with dramatic, often futuristic storytelling. Their 2023–2024 free dance program, themed around an otherworldly love story, received widespread praise and highlighted their commitment to pushing artistic boundaries in the sport.

In addition to their Olympic success, Chock and Bates are four-time U.S. national champions and the 2023 World Champions, a long-sought title that cemented their legacy as one of the premier ice dance teams globally. They have also claimed multiple medals on the Grand Prix circuit and at Four Continents Championships, consistently showcasing their technical precision and magnetic on-ice chemistry.
