Ellen Langer

Ellen Langer is a psychologist and professor at Harvard University, recognized as a pioneering figure in mindfulness, a topic she has been researching for 45 years. Often referred to as the Mother of Mindfulness, the Mother of Positive Psychology, and the Mother of Mind/Body Medicine, Professor Langer was the first woman to be tenured in the psychology department at Harvard. Her work has influenced how scholars and the public understand the role of attention, perception, and conscious awareness in daily life. Her book, "Mindfulness," introduced the concept to a broad audience and challenged assumptions about mindless behavior, contributing to research and practical applications in health, education, and business.

Throughout her career, Professor Langer has authored several works, including "The Power of Mindful Learning" and "Counterclockwise: Mindful Health and the Power of Possibility." These books, along with her latest, "The Mindful Body: Thinking Our Way to Lasting Health," examine how shifts in mindset can affect learning, aging, and well-being. Her research demonstrates that adopting a mindful approach—actively noticing new things and remaining open to information—can improve cognitive performance, enhance creativity, and influence physical health outcomes.

Professor Langer is a frequent speaker at international conferences, universities, and corporate events. At Harvard, The Langer Lab conducts research on health, happiness, decision- making, education, business and culture all through the lens of mindfulness. Because of this research, among other honors, she has earned three Distinguished Scientist Awards, The Staats Award for Unifying Psychology, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and The Liberty Science Genius Award.
