Edward (Ned) Hallowell

Edward Hallowell, M.D., is a board-certified child and adult psychiatrist recognized for his expertise in attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). A graduate of Harvard College and Tulane Medical School, Hallowell served as a faculty member at Harvard Medical School for more than two decades. He has treated individuals of all ages with ADHD since the early 1980s and has publicly shared his own experiences with dyslexia and ADHD, which have influenced his clinical approach to neurodiversity.

Hallowell is known for his strength-based approach to ADHD and neurodiversity, focusing on helping adults and children manage their conditions effectively. He co-authored the "Distraction" series with Dr. John Ratey, beginning with "Driven to Distraction," a book that played a significant role in raising public awareness about ADHD and has sold more than 1 million copies. Collectively, Hallowell's books have sold over 2 million copies and cover topics such as child development, managing worry, improving focus, forgiveness, building meaningful connections, and workplace motivation. His collaboration with Ratey, "ADHD 2.0," provides science-based strategies for managing ADHD across the lifespan. Hallowell has also published a memoir detailing his personal and professional journey in the field of ADHD.

Hallowell is the founder of The Hallowell ADHD Centers, with locations in Boston MetroWest, New York City, San Francisco, Palo Alto, and Seattle. These centers focus on the diagnosis and treatment of learning differences, particularly ADHD and dyslexia, using a strength-based methodology. Hallowell has stated, "I don't treat disabilities; I help unwrap gifts."

He is a regular columnist for ADDitude Magazine and has been featured on "20/20," "60 Minutes," Oprah, PBS, CNN, "The Today Show," Dateline, "Good Morning America," The New York Times, USA Today, Newsweek, Time, Los Angeles Times, and Boston Globe.
