Dr. Kirby Runyon Biography
Dr. Kirby Runyon is a planetary geologist, experiential space guide, and speaker whose expertise centers on the rocky landscapes of alien worlds in our solar system. Runyon earned a PhD in Planetary Geology from Johns Hopkins University. Runyon's career includes serving as a Senior Staff Scientist at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (APL), where he managed NASA grants and became the first person to discover mountains on Pluto during the 2015 New Horizons mission. Today, Runyon is a research scientist at the Planetary Science Institute (PSI) and the founder of Planetary Experience Consulting (Planex.space), leading planetary analog expeditions in New Mexico for commercial astronauts and space enthusiasts.
In addition to research, Runyon has served as a weightless flight coach for the Zero Gravity Corporation, facilitating parabolic zero-gravity experiences. He is the lead author of the upcoming book, “How to Vacation in Space Without Leaving Earth.” In 2024, an asteroid was named for him, Asteroid 216752 Kirbyrunyon 2005 PR23.
