Dr. Helen Turnbull

Dr. Helen Turnbull is an organizational consultant and the founder and CEO of Human Facets, an international consulting firm specializing in global inclusion and diversity. Turnbull is an expert in global inclusion, focusing her career on helping organizations address barriers to productivity related to diversity and workplace culture. In addition to her Ph.D., Turnbull holds two master's degrees in organizational behavior and mental health counseling, as well as an undergraduate degree in psychology and sociology. Her doctoral research examined stereotype threat and internalized oppression across cultures, providing her with a comprehensive understanding of inclusive environments.

With a career spanning more than 25 years, Turnbull has developed tools that are widely used in diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in major organizations. She is the author of three online psychometric assessment tools on unconscious bias and inclusion: "Cognizant," the "ISM Profile," and "The Gender Gap Assessment." Her "Inclusion Complexity Model" outlines three immutable forces and four permeable forces that influence inclusion, offering organizations a structured approach to fostering inclusive workplaces. Her client portfolio includes Texas Instruments, Raytheon, J.P. Morgan Chase, Aetna Insurance, Motorola, Hewlett Packard, AT&T, Lucent Technologies, IBM, and Citigroup Europe.

Turnbull's work has contributed to measurable outcomes for her clients. She has played a role in helping Texas Instruments win the Catalyst Award and has supported JP Morgan Chase and Citigroup Europe in earning the "Opportunity Now" Award and "Business in the Community" Awards. Commonwealth Bank of Australia received the Catalyst Award, attributing part of its success to "Cognizant," and QBE Insurance Australia was named Australian Employer of Choice, citing Human Facets' work on unconscious bias and inclusion with its leadership team.

As an author and researcher, Turnbull has contributed to academic and professional literature on inclusion and diversity. She received the "Distinguished Research Award" for her article "Diversity & Inclusion: Developing an Instrument for the Identification of Skills Deficiencies," published in Academy of Strategic Management Journal, and has been published in Organizational Culture, Communications and Conflict Journal and Reflective Practitioner Journal. Her books include "Blind Spots: A Conversation with Dr. Turnbull about Unconscious Bias" and "The Illusion of Inclusion."
