Douglass Williams

Douglass Williams is a Boston-based chef and restaurateur recognized for his contributions to the culinary industry, particularly in Italian cuisine and restaurant leadership. After undergoing surgery for Crohn's disease as a teenager, Williams developed an interest in wellness and nutrition, which led him to study at the Academy of Culinary Arts at Atlantic Cape Community College. His personal journey with health and food evolved into a global culinary education, including experience as a pasta cook at Coppa in Boston and cooking in Bangkok with Lat Phonchaiya. Williams further honed his culinary skills at Michelin-starred Corton in New York under Chef Paul Liebrandt and at Akrame in Paris.

Inspired by his international experiences, Williams opened "MIDA," an Italian-influenced neighborhood restaurant in Boston's South End, focusing on handmade pastas, bold flavors, and high-quality ingredients. The restaurant's name, derived from Italian words meaning "he or she gives," reflects Williams' emphasis on generosity and hospitality. Williams has expanded his restaurant group to include additional MIDA locations in Newton, East Boston, and Fenway, as well as APIZZA in the TD Garden area, contributing to Boston's dining scene with a focus on Italian food, pasta, and community engagement.

Williams has been recognized as a semi-finalist for the James Beard Foundation's Best Chef Northeast, awarded Best Chef, General Excellence by Boston Magazine, and named one of the top 10 Best New Chefs in America by Food & Wine. He has competed on the Food Network's "Iron Chef America." MIDA has received honors for "Best Restaurants in Boston" and "Best Pasta." Williams and his restaurants have been featured in major media, including New England Living's Chef Series on WBZ-TV/CBS Boston, where he discussed his journey with Crohn's disease and his approach to healing through food.

In addition to his culinary work, Williams is active in community initiatives. He serves as an ambassador for the Steppingstone Foundation, supporting educational access for students from underserved communities, and has collaborated with the Shah Family Foundation to improve nutrition in Boston Public Schools. As the owner of the only Black chef-owned restaurant in Boston, Williams uses food and conversation to foster community connections. His participation in Boston University's Dean's Distinguished Lecture Series highlights his commitment to education and community engagement within the culinary industry.
