Doug Flutie

Doug Flutie is recognized as one of the most versatile quarterbacks in professional football history, known for a career that challenged conventional expectations. At Boston College, Flutie played a pivotal role in revitalizing the football program, leading the Eagles to three consecutive bowl games and ending a 39-year postseason drought. His senior season featured a memorable 48-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass against the University of Miami, a play that remains one of the most iconic moments in college football. That year, Flutie recorded 3,454 passing yards and 27 touchdowns, earning All-America honors and becoming the first Boston College player to win the Heisman Trophy. He also received the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, and became the first major college football passer to surpass 10,000 career yards. The "Flutie effect," a term coined to describe the rise in Boston College applications following his Hail Mary pass, highlights his impact beyond the field.

Despite his collegiate achievements, Flutie encountered skepticism regarding his size and professional prospects. Over a 21-year career, he played 12 seasons in the National Football League, eight seasons in the Canadian Football League, and one season in the United States Football League. Flutie returned to the NFL with the Buffalo Bills, where he threw for 2,711 yards and 20 touchdowns in 10 starts, leading the team to a 7-3 record and a playoff appearance. He was named to the Pro Bowl and received Comeback Player of the Year honors from the Associated Press and Pro Football Weekly. Flutie concluded his career by executing the NFL's first drop kick since 1941, converting an extra point for the Miami Dolphins in the regular season finale.

He was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame and the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility, and became the first non-Canadian inducted into Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. Off the field, Flutie has dedicated his efforts to philanthropy. He and his wife, Laurie, established the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism in honor of their son, Doug Jr., who was diagnosed with autism at age three. The foundation supports programs that provide services, promote active lifestyles, and foster independence for people with autism. Flutie has raised more than $20 million for children with autism.
