Don Ruggles

Donald H. Ruggles, AIA, NCARB, ICAA, is a Colorado-based architect, author, educator, and speaker recognized for his work at the intersection of neuroscience and architectural design. Ruggles is known for his expertise in traditional and classical architecture, integrating design principles with contemporary scientific research to examine the impact of beauty in architecture on human health and well-being. He founded Ruggles Mabe Studio, which has completed more than 900 residential and commercial projects across 16 states and eight countries. As CEO-Emeritus of Ruggles Mabe Studio, he has overseen more than 1,300 projects with construction budgets exceeding $3 billion.

Ruggles’s interest in the relationship between neuroscience and design began after delivering a talk on timeless design and engaging with research from the Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture. This research supported his ideas about the connection between design and well-being, prompting further study and public lectures. Encouraged by colleagues, Ruggles authored the book "Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture: Timeless Patterns & Their Impact on Our Well-Being," which explores how design patterns influence health and emotional responses. The book draws from his extensive architectural experience and incorporates findings from neuroscience, fractal geometry, microbiology, and psychology to analyze the role of patterns in the perception of beauty.

"Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture" received the Independent Publishers Book Awards Bronze Medal and the Robert & Judi Newman Award for Literature & Journalism. The book was adapted into the documentary "Built Beautiful, An Architecture & Neuroscience Love Story With Narration by Martha Stewart." The film premiered at the Denver Film Festival and has been screened at festivals and conferences in North America and Europe. Gravitas Ventures distributed the documentary on platforms such as Amazon Prime, Google Play, and Hulu. "Built Beautiful" earned the Jacque Benedict Award for Excellence in Journalism from the Institute of Classical Architecture & Art Rocky Mountain Chapter.

Ruggles’s research demonstrates that beauty elicits a pleasure response in the brain and supports health and well-being by creating patterns and spaces that foster homeostasis between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. He advocates for the integration of neuroscience, biology, psychology, and architecture to form the discipline of neuro-architectology, which aims to design built environments that enhance health and well-being. Ruggles also founded the Center for Beauty, Neuroscience & Architecture, which provides educational resources for professionals, students, and thought leaders in architectural design.

Ruggles has lectured at universities worldwide, including Oxford University, Cambridge University, Princeton University, and the University of Miami, sharing his research on neuroscience and architecture. He served as Director of Classical Studies at the University of Colorado Denver, administering a graduate-level program focused on the relationship between history, beauty, and health in the built environment. Ruggles delivered a TEDx talk titled "It's Beautiful...And Good for Our Health," presenting his findings on the positive effects of beauty in architectural design. His professional recognition includes induction into Colorado Homes & Lifestyles Circle of Excellence, being named a Denver Business Journal Top Business Newsmaker, and receiving The Clinton Family Fund Medal for his contributions to classical architecture.
