Dr. Dimitri A. Christakis is a pediatrician, researcher, and parent who serves as the George Adkins Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington, director of the Center for Child Health, Behavior and Development at Seattle Children's Research Institute, and an attending pediatrician at Seattle Children's Hospital. Christakis holds a BA in English literature from Yale University, an MD from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, and an MPH from the University of Washington, where he also completed his pediatric residency and a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholarship. He is an adjunct professor in the Departments of Health Services and Psychiatry at the University of Washington.
The Christakis Lab investigates how early environments influence childhood behavior and development, developing strategies to help parents support their children's social, cognitive, and emotional growth. Christakis and his colleagues were among the first to identify that early television exposure, especially to fast-paced programs, can contribute to attention problems later in life. His research team has also demonstrated that playing with blocks can enhance language development in young children and that substituting prosocial programming for violent content can reduce aggression and improve behavior in preschoolers. Christakis's work explores the effects of screen use on very young children, focusing on early learning, cognitive and language development, and the importance of caregiver-child interactions, while highlighting the risks posed by digital media displacing these interactions.
Christakis is the author of more than 250 original research articles, multiple book chapters, a textbook of pediatrics, and "The Elephant in the Living Room: Make Television Work for Your Kids." He co-authored the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines on media use by young children and has served as editor-in-chief of JAMA Pediatrics. His research encompasses child development, digital technology, the impact of technology on adolescents, and artificial intelligence applications in healthcare and education.
Christakis has received the Research Award for Lifetime Contribution from the Academic Pediatric Association and is a member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences. He has also served as chief health officer of Special Olympics International, overseeing health programming including prevention, assessment, training, and health system strengthening. Christakis has appeared on CNN, NPR, Today, CBS News, ABC News, and NBC News, and as a TEDx speaker. He regularly addresses international audiences of pediatricians, parents, educators, and policymakers on the impact of early learning and media exposure on brain development.
