Didier Sornette

Didier Sornette is a French physicist recognized for his expertise in the prediction of crises and extreme events in complex systems, including financial markets, earthquakes, and other large-scale phenomena. Sornette is Professor Emeritus of Entrepreneurial Risks at ETH Zurich and serves as Chair Professor and Dean of the Institute of Risk Analysis, Prediction, and Management at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen. He is also a professor at the Swiss Finance Institute and is affiliated with both the Department of Physics and the Department of Earth Sciences at ETH Zurich. Sornette graduated from École Normale Supérieure in physical sciences and earned his doctorate at the University of Nice. He previously held positions as Professor of Geophysics at UCLA and Research Professor at the French National Centre for Scientific Research.

Sornette's research focuses on the predictability of extreme events in complex systems. He introduced the concept of "dragon kings," describing extreme events that result from deterministic mechanisms within self-organizing systems, distinct from random outliers in power-law distributions. This theory supports targeted prediction and mitigation of financial crashes, recessions, and other crises. Sornette launched the Financial Crisis Observatory to test the hypothesis that financial bubbles can be diagnosed in real time and their termination predicted probabilistically. The Observatory monitors more than 20,000 financial assets globally and has predicted several significant market events, including the bursting of Chinese stock market bubbles, the crude oil bubble, and the decoupling of the euro and Swiss franc.

Sornette is the author of "Why Stock Markets Crash: Critical Events in Complex Financial Systems," which presents a view that the causes of market crashes can be traced to the build-up of cooperative speculation leading to bubbles. He has also developed mathematical models for predicting best-seller potential using early sales data, demonstrating an interdisciplinary approach to risk analysis and data science.

Sornette has published more than 800 journal papers and 10 books, accumulating tens of thousands of academic citations. He is an elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a member of Academia Europaea, and a member of the Swiss Academy of Engineering Sciences. His honors include the Science et Défense French National Award, the McDonnell Research Award on Studying Complex Systems, and the Risques-Les Echos prize for work on the predictability of catastrophic events. Sornette's TED Talk on financial crisis predictability has established him as a leading voice in risk science, frequently addressing audiences that include policymakers, investors, scientists, and business leaders.
