Derek Redmond

Dr. Derek Redmond OLY is a British athlete known for his achievements in track and field, particularly as a European and World Champion sprinter. Redmond held the British record for the 400 meters sprint and secured gold medals in the 4 × 400 meters relay at the World Championships and European Championships. His athletics career began with national success, including a silver medal at the AAA Championships, followed by breaking and later reclaiming the British 400 meters record.

Redmond's place in athletics history was solidified at the World Athletics Championships, where he competed alongside Roger Black, John Regis and Kriss Akabusi. The British relay team defeated the favored American squad with a strategic last-minute change, finishing in 2:57.53, which was then the second-fastest 4 × 400 meters relay time recorded.

A defining moment in Redmond's career occurred at the Barcelona Olympics. After undergoing multiple surgeries for injuries, he posted the fastest time in the opening round and won his quarter-final. In the semi-final, Redmond suffered a hamstring tear with 250 meters remaining. He attempted to finish the race despite the injury, and his father joined him on the track to help him cross the finish line. Although Redmond was disqualified for outside assistance, the incident became a memorable moment in Olympic history. Following his athletics career, Redmond transitioned to other sports, playing professional basketball for Birmingham Bullets and the England national team, and competing in semi-professional rugby.
