Dean Karnazes

Dean Karnazes is a prominent figure in endurance athletics, recognized for his contributions to ultrarunning and human performance. An American ultrarunner, Karnazes began his journey into ultramarathon running on the night of his 30th birthday, transitioning from a corporate executive career to pursue endurance sports full-time.

Karnazes has completed a range of endurance challenges, including running 350 miles in 80 hours and 44 minutes without sleep, completing The Relay—a 199-mile run from Calistoga to Santa Cruz—multiple times, running a marathon to the South Pole in subzero temperatures without snowshoes, completing a marathon in each of the 50 states in 50 consecutive days, and running 3,000 miles across the United States from Disneyland to New York City in 75 days. His competitive accomplishments include winning the Badwater Ultramarathon, known as the World's Toughest Footrace, and the 4 Deserts Challenge, which involves racing in some of the most extreme environments on earth. Karnazes has competed on all seven continents multiple times. His unique physiology has been highlighted in the Stan Lee's "Superhumans" documentary television series, which noted his ability to manage lactic acid build-up during prolonged exertion.

Karnazes is also a New York Times bestselling author, known for books such as "Ultramarathon Man: Confessions of an All-Night Runner," "50/50: Secrets I Learned Running 50 Marathons in 50 Days, and How You Too Can Achieve Super Endurance," "Run! 26.2 Stories of Blisters and Bliss," and "The Road to Sparta: Reliving the Epic Run of the Ancient Messenger Pheidippides." His book "A Runner's High" continues his exploration of endurance running. The "Endurance 50" project, in which he ran a marathon in all 50 states in 50 days, was featured in the film "UltraMarathon Man: 50 Marathons, 50 States, 50 Days."
