David Wolf

Dr. David Wolf is a retired NASA astronaut, medical doctor, and electrical engineer recognized for his technically diverse career in human spaceflight, space medicine, and biomedical engineering. Wolf spent 168 days in space and conducted seven spacewalks across four missions, flying aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, Atlantis, Discovery, and Endeavor, as well as the International Space Station, Russian Space Station Mir, and Spacelab. He holds a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering from Purdue University and a Doctor of Medicine from Indiana University. Wolf completed his medical internship at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and United States Air Force flight surgeon training at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas.

Before his spaceflights, Wolf contributed to advancements in science and medicine at NASA. At Johnson Space Center, he developed the American Flight Echocardiograph, used to investigate cardiovascular physiology in microgravity. As the lead developer of the Space Bioreactor, Wolf advanced tissue engineering methodologies now applied in cancer research and regenerative medicine, demonstrating additional benefits when conducted in microgravity. He holds 17 U.S. patents, received the NASA Exceptional Engineering Achievement Medal, and was named NASA Inventor of the Year. Wolf also earned more than 20 Space Act Awards, primarily for three-dimensional tissue engineering technologies, and received the Texas State Bar Patent of the Year.

Wolf's spaceflight career began with mission STS-58, the Spacelab Life Sciences 2 mission aboard Space Shuttle Columbia, which NASA recognized as one of the most successful Spacelab flights. He later completed cosmonaut training in Russian and undertook a long-duration mission of 128 days aboard the Russian Mir space station, overcoming multiple technical challenges while conducting microgravity research and supporting the development of the International Space Station. During this mission, Wolf became the first American to vote from space.

Subsequent missions, STS-112 and STS-127, focused on International Space Station assembly, where Wolf led spacewalking operations and installed major structural components. On STS-127, he led the spacewalk team in five extravehicular activities, matching the record for a single mission. Wolf also served as chief of the Astronaut Office Extravehicular Activity Branch, overseeing the development, testing, and execution of spacewalks for ISS construction. He retired from NASA after his tenure in these roles.

Wolf has continued to contribute to science, technology, and engineering education. He is a member of the Space Technology Hall of Fame and has published more than 40 technical papers, primarily on regenerative tissue engineering. Wolf holds two honorary doctorates from Indiana and Purdue University and serves as a professor of aeronautical and aerospace engineering at Purdue. The City of Indianapolis named a bridge the Astronaut David Wolf Bridge in his honor. Drawing on his experience managing emergencies in space, Wolf addresses topics such as leadership, innovation, and high-pressure decision-making in science and engineering.
