
David Mizejewski is a wildlife naturalist who serves as the head naturalist and ambassador for the National Wildlife Federation. With a degree in human and natural ecology from Emory University, Mizejewski focuses on urban ecology, the impact of native plants on wildlife populations, and strategies for restoring wildlife habitats in cities, towns, neighborhoods, backyards, and gardens. Over more than two decades with the National Wildlife Federation, Mizejewski has worked to make ecological topics accessible to a broad audience, emphasizing wildlife conservation and habitat restoration.
Mizejewski hosted and co-produced "Backyard Habitat," a television series on Animal Planet that demonstrated how to create wildlife-friendly spaces in residential areas. He has also hosted shows on NatGeo WILD and Animal Planet, and frequently appears on broadcast outlets such as NBC's Today Show, ABC's Good Morning America, NPR's All Things Considered, CNN, The Martha Stewart Show, Conan, The Wendy Williams Show, Access Hollywood, The Weather Channel, and Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Mizejewski is known for bringing live animals to television sets and translating wildlife science into engaging stories for viewers, making him a sought-after expert for media producers and journalists.
As an author, Mizejewski wrote the gardening how-to book "Attracting Birds, Butterflies and Other Backyard Wildlife," which received the Publisher's Marketing Association Benjamin Franklin Award and was later reissued in an expanded edition. The book features photography, plant recommendations to support wildlife, and projects for families interested in gardening and wildlife conservation. Mizejewski contributes to Gardening How-To magazine and serves as a contributing editor at Birds and Blooms magazine. He has also worked as a wildlife consultant on motion picture productions, including "Where the Wild Things Are" and "Legend of the Guardians."
Mizejewski is a graduate and board member of Emerging Wildlife Conservation Leaders, a leadership training and mentoring program for conservation professionals. He has served on advisory groups for the North American Pollinator Protection Campaign, Biodiversity Council, Alliance for Workplace Excellence, OurEarth.org, and Mother Earth News magazine. Mizejewski was included in the Out 100 list, Out magazine's compilation of influential LGBTQ+ individuals.
