Daryl Davis

Daryl Davis is an American R&B and blues musician, author, and race relations expert known for his approach to addressing hatred and fostering racial reconciliation. A graduate of Howard University with a Bachelor of Music degree, Davis has performed and toured internationally with artists such as Chuck Berry, The Legendary Blues Band, and Elvis Presley's Jordanaires. Serving as Chuck Berry's pianist for 32 years, Davis combined his musical career with efforts to build bridges with individuals who initially harbored racial animosity toward him.

Davis began engaging with leaders of the Ku Klux Klan and other White supremacist groups to explore the question, "How can you hate me when you don't even know me?" Through direct conversations, Davis sought understanding and fostered dialogue, which led to lasting friendships and prompted over 200 individuals to disavow their affiliations with hate groups. His work in race relations has been documented in his nonfiction book, "Klan-Destine Relationships," recognized as the first book by a Black author to feature in-person interviews with Klan members. Davis's experiences are also highlighted in the documentary "Accidental Courtesy," frequently broadcast on PBS, and in his follow-up book, "The Klan Whisperer." His TEDx talk on race relations has received millions of views.

Davis has received several honors for his contributions to race relations, including the American Ethical Union's Elliott-Black Award, Carnegie Mellon's Carl Sagan Award, and the Tribeca Disruption Innovation Award. He holds an honorary doctorate in humane letters from Post University. Davis has appeared in productions such as HBO's "The Wire," and his insights are regularly featured by media outlets including CNN, MSNBC, ABC News, Newsweek, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and People magazine.

Davis's work extends internationally, with the U.S. State Department selecting him to present programs on race relations and conflict in various countries. His keynote presentations emphasize the importance of curiosity and dialogue in overcoming prejudice, drawing on real-world examples from his decades of experience. Davis continues to contribute to conversations on diversity, inclusion, and social justice through his music, writing, and public speaking.
