Daniel S. Goldin served as the ninth and longest-tenured administrator of NASA, appointed by President George H. W. Bush and continuing his service under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. Before joining NASA, Goldin was vice president and general manager of the TRW Space & Technology Group in Redondo Beach, California, where he led projects in defense, advanced communication spacecraft, space technologies, and scientific instruments. He began his career as a research scientist at what is now NASA's Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, focusing on electric propulsion systems for manned interplanetary travel.
Upon assuming leadership at NASA, Goldin implemented a management philosophy known as "faster, better, cheaper," addressing concerns about the agency's efficiency and mission costs. His reforms resulted in a $40 billion reduction from prior budget plans, a shift in funding to balance aeronautics and space programs, and a significant reduction in the civil service and contractor workforce, all without forced layoffs. Goldin reduced human space flight funding from 48 percent to 38 percent of NASA's total budget and increased funding for science and aerospace technology from 31 to 43 percent.
Goldin's tenure included major achievements in human spaceflight, science, and international cooperation. He oversaw the redesign, construction, and initial operation of the International Space Station and guided the initial concept for the James Webb Space Telescope. Goldin contributed to the design, development, and operations of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, Chandra X-Ray Telescope, Hubble Space Telescope rescue mission, and Spitzer Infrared Space Telescope. During his nearly decade-long term, he oversaw 60 additional space shuttle missions, including the first flight of the orbiter Endeavour, the Shuttle-Mir program, Hubble servicing missions, and the initial space station assembly missions. He also initiated the Origins Program to study the evolution of the universe and the origins of life.
Goldin has been recognized by industry peers and publications, named among the world's top 40 most influential defense-industry leaders by Defense Business and one of the 100 most influential people in government by National Journal. He received the National Space Trophy from the Rotary National Award for Space Achievement Foundation, the Laurel Award from Aviation Week & Space Technology, the French Legion of Honor medal, Aviation Week Network's Laureate Lifetime Achievement Award, and The Explorers Club's Buzz Aldrin Award.
Following his NASA tenure, Goldin founded Cold Canyon, an innovation advisory company, and served as a senior advisor to Cerberus Capital Management. His expertise spans space exploration, science, aeronautics, air traffic management, national security systems, semiconductors, advanced sensors, hypersonics, communications, and artificial intelligence. Goldin is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Astronautical Society. He holds 18 honorary doctorates from leading universities. With more than six decades of experience in engineering and leadership, Goldin continues to mentor emerging deep technology companies and advise on critical national capabilities in aerospace and technology innovation.
